The new frames are fully supported by additional nose pads, varying side lengths and tips. Every frame comes with an innovative headband with a unique interface incorporating a bayonet mount. There are many makes and price ranges for corrective eyewear for shooting.  In the lower price bracket is a model called Top Gun. Transitions XTRActive lenses are the latest in the range of photochromic lenses available for spectacle wearers.  Manufacturers of photochromic lenses have been working hard to continue the development of the technology that enables lenses to react to sun light.

Improvements in this technology has resulted in photochromic lenses that have very little residual tint, in other words, are very clear indoors.  Reaction times have also improved with the latest Transition lenses fading back to 70% light transmittance within 9 minutes from a fully darkened lens.  Traditionally, photochromic lenses have always performed better in colder temperatures and have struggled to fully darken on warmer days.  Until now, this type of lens has reacted to UV light meaning that when driving, the car windscreen prevented any real benefits from photochromic lenses for the driver. 

The new XTRActive lenses have been developed to react to visible light and will now darken to 50% light transmittance behind the windscreen of a car, even at temperatures of 27°C. 

When outdoors and at temperatures around 95°F the new Transitions XTRActive lenses will darken to 20% light transmittance , as dark as sunglasses.  This compares to a light transmittance of around 27% in the same conditions when wearing the latest photochromic lenses.

XTRActive lenses retain a light tint even indoors.  People that are light sensitive or that work in really bright environments may find this to be a benefit.

The new Transitions XTRActive lenses have a light grey residual tint and darken to a green-grey colour.  As with all photochromic lenses, they block 100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays and provide UV400 protection.

XTRActive lenses are the darkest photochromic lenses available.  They have a slight tint when indoors.  They will darken moderately behind the windscreen of a car and are approved as suitable for night driving.  They make very versatile spectacles.

The main considerations when choosing sunglasses for your sport should be

• The shape and material of the frame

• The material and design of the lenses

• The colour and density of the tint

For many sports the ideal materials for both the frame and the lenses will be ones that are both impact resistant and lightweight. The shape should afford wide fields of vision and may be required to protect against lateral impact. Wrap style frames are very fashionable while offering good protection from foreign bodies and great overall protection from harmful UV light.

Tint colour choices are subjective. As a general guide

• Grey provides the most natural colour vision and makes a good general choice

• Brown enhances contrast and provides a warmer appearance to colours

• Green filters blue light and enhances contrast in low light condition

Fixed or Solid Tints will provide full UV protection and protect your eyes from the sun and soften the sunlight. Of greater benefit are polarised lenses.

Polarised lenses protect your eyes from glare. When sunlight hits a reflective surface the rays polarise, the vertical light brings us useful information, and the horizontal light is white glare. It is glare that causes us to squint and strains our eyes. Any potentially bright outdoor activities such as sailing, skiing, golfing or fishing will see vastly enhanced optical quality by wearing prescription polarised sunglasses. Drivers will benefit from eliminating the blinding glare of the suns reflections from metal objects or from road surfaces.

Where potential impact is a risk lens materials such as polycarbonate or the very latest NXT Trivex material should be considered. These are tough materials that will afford your eyes some protection from flying objects.

NXT is a next generation Trivex material that was originally developed by the US military.

Nike prescription sunglasses with Grey tinted lenses provide true colour perception and low colour distortion.  NXT lenses with a Brown tint enhance colour contrast and minimise eyestrain, making ideal prescription sunglasses for driving while also being the first choice for fishing.  NXT tinted lenses are also available in green, providing contrast in low light and reducing eye strain in bright light.

All NXT prescription sunglass lenses come with advanced scratch-resistant coatings to help cope with wear and tear.  The lenses can be further enhanced by the addition of mirror coatings.

The parameters of the binoculars, usually printed on the model, will determine its performance.  With a specification of 10x42, for example, the first figure tells us that the distance image will be magnified 10 times.  The second figure tells us that the objective lens diameter is 42mm.  In general terms, the larger the diameter – the more light can be gathered, giving a clearer, brighter image.  Binoculars with a specification of 10x42 will therefore give a brighter, sharper image than ones with a specification of 10x25.

A larger diameter binocular lens will help bird watchers stay focused on their target and a larger field of vision gives a clear advantage to sailors on a moving yacht.

Multi-coatings and anti-reflective coatings on binocular lenses reduce the loss of light giving a much brighter image than uncoated lenses.

Binoculars with roof prism have light received partially polarised, helping to cut down glare.

Binoculars are a great favourite with amateur astronomers.  The craters of the moon are spectacular viewing and larger lens binoculars are a great aid to star gazing.  Even the smaller compact binoculars favoured by bird watchers or by tourists will make viewing the night sky much more fun.
